Past, Present, and Future: Movies and Music

Posted by Michael Stone | September 15, 2009

Anyone that is a movie/music buff, has go to be asking the same question I'm about to ask..

The other day I got into a conversation about past movies and music and their remakes and covers.

Batman, Superman, The Hulk, Kink Kong, just some examples of movies that have been recently recreated.

With music it's the same thing. You've got Zombies being covered by Miser, Numerous amounts of Clapton songs, Free Fallin' recently covered by John Mayer.

You're probably asking yourself, why is he providing all of this useless information.. Take in consideration all of the covers and remakes and then how long music and movies have been around. Are you ready?

The question:

10 years from now, what do you think movies and music will consist of? There are only so many movies you can come up with. There are only so many books that are different enough to make movies about. In the last decade there has been a big transition to computer animated sound effects and keyboards in music, how many more sounds can be created to create something new, something unique that will blow everyone out of the water.

I'm curious to see what some of you think will come of movies and music in the next decade. Who will be the main actors/actresses. What bands or genres will be at the top of the charts.

Time to get creative!

Very interesting question, and one that I've thought about myself (not so much in music, but in movies). I am surprised that people can keep coming up with movies... but they do, and sometimes they are really good. I don't think that the content has to keep being "new". I don't think that's why we watch movies. Yes, if a movie does have a really unique story, that rocks and is rare. But, at the end of the day, we watch movies to get some sort of emotional connection with the characters whether its empathy or jealousy or inspiration. You don't need to be completely unique to get this done... you just need to "Be." Take the show House of example. I love that show, one of my favorites. But, it's completely predictable. House has a case. Its hard to solve. He makes a diagnosis. It's wrong. In a break through, he comes up with the right diagnosis. He saves the day. Most of the episodes are exactly like this; but, that doesn't mean it's boring - it means it's predictably good because I know that I can emotionally engage with the show in a way that I enjoy. Also, remember that we don't just have the movies, we have the actors. They are the canvas on which the movie is painted. Each actor contributes in a different way. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Vin Diesel. Both of these guys play "bad asses", but in different ways. You put both of them in a similar movie and you get a different product. There will always be new actors providing new kinds of experiences.

@Ben, Excellent answer! Not only have I seen every episode of House, but I own every season. I believe it's the subtle differences in movies that make them worth watching. I don't know if you've heard of the myth, "A movie is different every time you watch it.", but for me, it definitely applies. It's like a shock to the brain. Also, I thought Vin Diesel was awesome in the Pacifier! ;)
